When I started to get slipping deeper to the planner world, I saw, there is a brand, called Van der Spek. This is a family business in Netherlands, they create custom planners. What a great idea! But when I first saw the prices, I shocked. I decided quickly: no, it is not for me. I checked the site sometimes and always closed with a big sigh.
Couple weeks ago I was listening to The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Plannerverse - Episode 5 about why you would spend lot more money on a planner. And of course on other things too. You can drive a VW, but you can have an... OMG, I forgot the example :D But a luxury car brand - use here whichever you want :D And if something is important for you, why not have something luxurious? This thought was swirling in my head. I deserve it! The planner is a thing what I use every single day. It helps me to keep myself and my family together. Its price is very far from a luxury car :D
I collected my arguments
Years went and now I have more Maldens, and other cheaper binders, and I don't use all of them. Why not selling all expensive binders for having money for the VDS?
I have experience, what I like in a planner, and what I don't need - speaking about the pocket layout: I don't get the tight pockets, where I can't put in / take out the things easily. I don't use cards in my planners - so I don't need pocket slots. I need a place in my personal size planner for an A4 size paper. I keep masking stickers, and other stickers mostly in my pockets.
So let the adventure begin!
1. I joined the VDS community on Facebook
And started to bomb them with my questions and brainstorming.
2. Searching the right color combination
I was sure that I want more colors, something not sophisticated, but vibrating. Most examples I saw was only one color, or not contrasting colors.
My favourite color is the 6219 (on the pic right side), but unfortunately it can be used only in the inside - it is too delicate. If it could be used outside, than I wouldn't hesitate too much: 6219 outside, menta inside. So I needed to brainstorm. I created a lot combination, but I was unsure, what I want.
3. Ordered leather samples
If you don't know, where to do this, follow this link! They were here maybe within a week. And I could narrow the options. Still too much :D
4. Started sketching
On the website you can choose the leather, stitching, and adding some extras to the base planner, like big back pocket, extra penloop, etc. But, if you want different layout, you can do that too: just write an email, explain what you want, and let see, if it possible or not.
I went through the pictures in the group, searched in Google, YouTube, collected ideas. This is what I came out with, and my first coloring (I wanted use all of my favorite colors :D):
5. Incubation time
I didn't ordered immediately. I waited that I can see, what I think after a while. The samples were on my table. I took a look on my coloring sometimes. And I found that is too much. The turchese nappa is too light. I have to use my favorite 6219 inside... One morning I made these two pictures as final two options.
And what I've chosen: the very first combination :D Menta nappa outside, 6219 inside. I added some menta in the inside to add more interest. Stitching will be the opposite.
6. Deep breath a writing to Petra...
I sent the sketch to Petra in email. By the custom planner is the exactly same layout as in the Touch Me (pre made) planner is not possible, so we are now closing the possibilities and wishes. Unfortunately the weekend interrupted the process.
To be continued... :)
